Number 42 Sample Quiz

Round 10: Music Round

This is Round 10 of the Number 42 Sample Quiz! The total sample quiz consists of 10 rounds, with a total of 100 quiz questions. Great work: you have reached the final round! We will end the quiz with a ‘name that tune’ music round. You’ll hear 10 songs.
We are looking for the title and the artist of each clip, for half a point each. So you can earn 10 more points on this round! We thought it was a little too easy to show a photo of the artists. Instead, you will see a (sometimes very) cryptic image that refers to either the title or the artist.

The songs will appear in chronological order. We’ll kick off in 1972.

The Temptations – Papa was a Rollin’ Stone

This version of the song was not the first, but it was the most successful. It was released by The Temptations, at Motown.

This song is from 1973. It refers to a period in the musician’s own life. Once again, we are looking for the title and artist!

Billy Joel – Piano Man

Billy Joel worked as a bar pianist in the early 70s. He did that under the pseudonym Bill Martin, because he was more or less ‘living undercover’ hoping to get out of a contract with a record label. The song, which refers to those days, has since become a true classic. In case you were wondering about the picture: it’s Ikea’s ‘Billy’ bookcase.

The unique voices you hear in this 1978 hit can only come from one band. Which band is that and what is the title?

The Bee Gees – Stayin’ Alive

Stayin ‘Alive is a single from the Australian pop group The Bee Gees. The song was written for the soundtrack of the film Saturday Night Fever and is one of the most recognizable songs by the group.

This song had already been recorded by Gloria Jones in the 60s, but with little success. In 1981, an English duo ran with it and turned it into a global hit. Name the band and the title!

Soft Cell – Tainted Love

The British synth pop duo Soft Cell recorded a version of the song in 1981. Their version differs substantially from the original; they adopted a slower pace and replaced the electric guitars and wind instruments with synthesizers and drum computers. The single became an international hit.

In 1986 this lady with the world’s oldest profession became a big hit. What is her name and which band made her famous?

The Police – Roxanne

Sting wrote the song inspired by prostitutes he saw near a hotel where The Police were staying in Paris. The song was named after a character from the play Cyrano de Bergerac, for which he saw a poster in the hotel.

The success of this single from 1993 would never again be matched by this band. It really is a memorable song!

Spin Doctors – Two Princes

The song was one of the biggest hits of 1993 and even made it into a performance on Sesame Street.

This 2006 song was a big hit for a singer who went solo after spending years in a boy band. It turned out to be a good decision. Who is he and what is the name of the song?

Justin Timberlake – SexyBack

SexyBack contains a sample of Timbaland’s voice. He is also a producer of this single. The track was written by Timberlake and Nate Hills.

This song was a massive hit in 2008. We are looking for the band and the title.

Kings of Leon – Sex on Fire

The band consists of the three brothers Caleb, Jared and Nathan Followill and their cousin Matthew. The band was looking for a catchy opening line. During practice they came up with ‘Set us on fire’. However, one of the sound mixers misheard this as Sex on fire. The band liked that so much that it became the final title!

In 2014 this was the debut for a British singer-songwriter. It is about a place where the singer himself had never even been at that time …

George Ezra – Budapest

In March 2018, Ezra’s second album was released. It’s called Staying at Tamara’s. Just like his debut album, it reached first place in the British charts. The first single Don’t matter now wasn’t a big hit, but the following singles Paradise and Shotgun both did well.

This singer released hit after hit in 2018. This was one of them! In the song she sings about her exes and what she has learned from them. Who is she and what is the name of the song?

Ariana Grande – Thank U, Next

The video clip, which refers to all kinds of popular films, was a huge success and set the record for most views in 24 hours on YouTube.

Nice work, you! You've completed the final round. You did it. High Five!
